SEEscapes by Philip Lange

Runs Through October 5

The current show is SEEscapes by Philip Lange, who presents a wonderful series of his photographs recently taken in Spain. As Peter Marr describes "traditional "landscapes" and "cityscapes have been magically transformed by Philip Lange into "SEEscapes" offering truly intimate portraits of life, largely in cities through Spain. He has beautifully captured the atmosphere, the warmth and the vibrancy of daily life in these cities." Select photographs in the show are also displayed at Edibles Restaurant and Starry Nites Cafe just to the west of Image City on University Avenue.
The exhibit also features the work of Guest Photographers Josh Bulriss, JC Krueger, Kristin Leitten, and Weiye Wang who each exhibit wonderful photographs that take us to other photogenic people and places. Exhibiting Artist-in-Residence are Gil Maker, Jim Patton, and David Perlman. Exhibiting Gallery Partners are Daniel P. Crozet, Joel Krenis, Dan Neuberger, Betsy Phillips, Gary Thompson, Phyllis Thompson, Sheridan Vincent, and George Wallace.

Picks of the Show
Peter MarrPeter Marr Picks Three Favorites from the Current Show

For each  of the Image City shows Peter Marr picks his favorites from the photographs exhibited by the featured photographer and the guest photographers. For the SEEscapes show Peter chose Philip Lange's Morocco #1, the photo featured in the previous article about the show. Peter described it as "a superb image, wonderfully seen, captured and printed." There have already been two sales of this photograph during the show. Two additional picks were Despair, that captures a portrait of a beautiful girl and culture by Josh Bulriss and a grand panoramic landscape from China titled Du-Jiang-Yan by Weiye Wange. Click here to see Peter's Picks and to read his comments.
Announcing Image City's Collectors' Club
Begins October 8, 2008
Collecting photographs can itself be an act of creativity, a path for discovery and a way of sharing a passion. Above all, it is fun!

Image City is pleased to announce the launch of its Collectors' Club to encourage photography lovers to either start collecting photographs or to enlarge their existing collection. Starting with our next show on October 8, the Collectors' Club will be open to any individual photography enthusiast for their own collection.
Because we think that a large disposable income in not necessary to collect photographs, the membership ($35 per year) offers the opportunity for members of the club to buy up to five eligible photographs per year at very attractive discounted selling prices. New photographs eligible to the Collectors Club will be available for each of Image City's thirteen shows.
A photograph collection can be build around a specific subject, such as landscapes, rural or urban; architecture, glamour, specific places, abstract, etc. Or a collector may choose a specific artist or specific technique, for instance black-and-white. Contemporary fine art is recognized by all specialists as an excellent starting point for taking up the rewarding activity of collecting photographs. Each year, Image City shows about 1200 new photographs from local artists, this exceptional diversity and choice allows you to build a collection which will distinguish your decor from your neighbors and perhaps spice it up with unusual pieces.
Collector does not mean accumulator, but the Image City Collectors Club is now available to help you buy photographs that you like and that you will enjoy for years to come. Apply now to be set to purchase after October 8. Application forms will be available during your visit. Please enjoy this new, possibly addictive, activity.

Gary Thompson's Photo Tip of Month
Sleepy Hollow Farm by Gary Thompson"S" Curves

"S" curves in streams, rocks, trails, roadways, and wherever present provide excellent compositional possibilities. Some say the "S" curve is naturally sensual. I'm not sure, but I do know that when used in an image it can be very pleasant. My example image is of "Sleepy Hollow Farm" formerly called "Gray's Farm". It is located in the back country of Vermont a few miles north of Woodstock. The sweeping portion of the "S" curve provided by the driveway is not only pleasing, but also leads the eye smoothly down into the image and ultimately to the rustic barn. In this instance even a portion of a full "S" curve is effective. The heavy rain from the fallout of a July hurricane enhanced the ambiance and moodiness of this composition. Click here to see all of the tips and example photos from Gary Tips.

The Magic of Light -- 2nd Image City Juried Show
 Behind the Scene
The organization of the Juried Show at Image City requires some advance planning. Taking a look behind the scene, we share with you how we got it started.
 Example Image by Betsy Phillips
Step 1: Choice of the Theme
The initial discussion about this 2nd juried show started in June. As a start it seemed that building on the success of the Elsewhere theme show last year we could name the next show "Somewhere", "Anywhere" .... then some partners started to joke with this approach, proposing "Tupperware", "Underwear".... so we quickly decided that we were going "Nowhere" with this idea.
Refocusing some other theme titles were discussed: "At the Edge", "Shapes", "Alphabet", but none of them appeared to be broad or challenging enough for the creativity that we wanted. Finally, the consensus came around "light" and its magic effect on many photographs and... "The Magic of Light" became our choice.
Step 2: Choice of Images for the Promotional Materials
The partners proposed a sample of their own images which could be used to illustrate the theme. Check out the selection by clicking here. From this very diverse set, the two images by Betsy Philips and Phyllis Thompson that you see on the postcards and website were selected. We will continue to use them through out the promotional efforts of the show.
In the next newsletter, I will continue to share with you the behind the scene aspects of The Magic of Light. Until then, keep the creativity turned up. All of the Image City partners look forward to receiving your submissions very soon. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate contacting us.
